With (Thomas Wentworth, 1st Earl of) Stafford executed, Irish Catholics felt unprotected against Protestant reprisals. In a pre-emptitive strike, they attacked first. Late in 1641, news of Irish killings began filtering through England graphically illustrated by a campaign of atrocity prints. Now bad things did happen, but the usual fantasy pictures of impaled babies tripped the wire of Anglo-Protestant paranoia ...
